For many years, the DAR and the SAR had been criticized for not being inclusive and for their past policies that excluded individuals based on race and ethnicity. However, over time, both organizations have made efforts to address these issues and become more inclusive. The DAR has publicly acknowledged its past discriminatory practices. Since then, both organizations have started to accept a broader range of applications, including those from individuals with Native American and African American heritage, and have worked to document the contributions of minority patriots during the Revolutionary War.
